Club is bowled over by donation for lawn mower
Britannia Bowling Club has received £1,000 from our Community Support Scheme to fund the purchase of a specialist lawn mower for their green.
The club, which is the second oldest in Chesterfield with its first recorded match played in 1899, also invited the Society to visit and have a go at playing the game on their freshly mown green.
On Sunday 7th May, 6 members of staff and their families visited the group’s clubhouse to learn the basics of crown green bowls from members of the club. In the wonderful sunshine, staff were able to get on onto the green and practice, with some even deciding to join the club as a result.
After playing, staff were also invited to have lunch with the club, and members were able to discuss the benefits of the funding. President Lynn Clark said ‘Our club allows individuals to come together, meet new people, socialise and exercise. We are a not for profit club which is entirely self-financing and so local funding is important in allowing us to improve the experience of our club members and promote bowling in the community’.
On the impact our funding has had, Clive Davies, Vice President of Britannia Bowling Club, said ‘We had been using second hand mowers for the past 17 years, but they were inefficient in mowing a crown green and the poor quality of the cut was impacting on the members ability to play at a higher level. With The Mansfield’s funding we've been able to purchase a professional tournament mower and as a result the quality of bowls played at our club has increased, with many visiting teams complimenting our green’.
Richard Crisp, Commercial Development Executive at the Society who visited the club, said ‘It was great fun playing bowls with Britannia Bowling Club. All the staff that came had a great day and we couldn’t have asked for better weather or company. We fund around 40 local groups every year through our Community Support Scheme, and by meeting members of the club today we can see the difference our funding has made to their experience’.
Our Community Support Scheme funds local groups and organisations in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire and meets twice yearly in May and November to consider applications. To find out more or to download an application form click here.
