Dr Marcellus Baz BEM confirmed for Mansfield’s AGM and Community Celebration Event
Dr Marcellus Baz BEM, winner of the Unsung Hero award at the 2016 BBC Sports Personality of the Year and recipient of a British Empire Medal, will speak at Mansfield Building Society’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Community Celebration Event on Thursday 24 April 2025.

He is the founder and CEO of Switch Up CIC and the Marcellus Baz Foundation. Since 2013, the two organisations have been utilising sport, mentoring, education, employability and counselling through their award-winning five pillar model, to transform the lives of vulnerable and disadvantaged young people. The schemes help them to improve their mental and physical wellbeing and transition into employment training and education.
Switch Up targets its support to Nottinghamshire communities, however Baz has travelled all over the world to deliver his inspiring message. His work has taken him to Denmark, Norway, LA, and Brazil – and he has represented the UK at the prestigious TED conference in Vancouver.
He was awarded an honorary degree (Doctor of Public Administration) from Nottingham Trent University in 2019, recognising his tireless dedication to serving communities.
About Mansfield’s AGM and Community Celebration Event
Taking place from 5.30pm at Portland College’s Newstart Theatre, Mansfield’s AGM and Community Celebration Event is open to Society Members and invited guests and is free to attend.
The event includes the talk from Marcellus, announcements of the Society’s 2024 performance and a celebration of local volunteers in the form of Mansfield’s annual Community Star Awards. The event is expected to close at around 7.30pm.
Chief Executive, Paul Wheeler, said that he was looking forward to showcasing what a local building society is all about:
“As a local building society, we’re owned by our Members – customers who use us for their mortgage and savings needs. The AGM gives them the opportunity to quiz us directly about our ongoing performance and vote on key matters.
We’re much more than the finances though, and we also want to shine a spotlight on the great things that are happening in our community. We’re delighted to welcome Marcellus as a speaker, he has a wealth of experience to draw upon and will talk about the great work going on in our local area.
The event finale will be our annual Community Star Awards, where we recognise the dedication and commitment of local volunteers to the community and environment with the presentation of our awards and prizes of up to £500!”
