Mansfield Senior Reds Walking Football Club receive a portable defibrillator donation
The Mansfield Senior Reds can now play football with peace of mind thanks to the donation of a portable defibrillator from our Community Support Scheme.
Mansfield Senior Reds Walking Football Club is based in Mansfield and caters for anyone over the age of 50 who wants to keep fit and socialise through sport. The club has over 60 members who keep fit and healthy without the intensity of a traditional football match, the oldest member of the team is 76.
Many of the venues where the group compete do not have a defibrillator and the club has had a couple of incidents over the past few years which has brought to light the need to have one to hand at matches.
The Reds applied to our Community Support Scheme asking if the Society would be happy to cover the costs of acquiring a portable defibrillator which costs just over £1,000. Instead of donating funds to the group, we gifted the Reds a defibrillator for them to take on their travels.
Silvano Taylor, Manager of the Mansfield Senior Reds Walking Football Club, said “The Club allows members to enjoy exercise, no matter what their fitness level in a relaxed and social environment. We are very grateful to Mansfield Building Society for the portable defibrillator. With many of the players over the age of 50, there is a greater need to ensure our team can compete safely, and enjoy the game knowing that they have the appropriate safeguards available should they need them.”
Gev Lynott, Chief Executive at the Society, met the Senior Reds at their training session at Mansfield Rugby Club to present the defibrillator to the team. He said “It has been a pleasure to meet members of the team and see how they get to keep fit whilst meeting new people and socialising. It’s also great to hear of the success the Reds have had since their formation in 2014 and we wish them the best of luck in all their future matches.”
Mansfield Building Society’s Community Support Scheme funds local groups and organisations in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire and meets twice yearly in May and November to consider funding requests. For more information or to download an application form, click here.
